- Sampans are long wooden boats, varying in design, generally used for fishing or transportation. Some include a small shelter on board, and are usually propelled by oars or outboard motors. Sampans are still extensively used throughout East and Southeast Asia. Shrimp boats are round and basket-like, and propelled with a single oar.
