Description
Study of 23 pollen samples associated with archaeological sites in the Walhalla Glades district of Grand Canyon National Park yields surface sample data not consistant with prior research, possibly because the samples are actually of sediment deposited during the period the sites were occupied. Pollen record suggests local prehistoric cultivation in a paleoenvironment quite distinct from that presently occurring in this district.

Description
Analysis of palynological and radiocarbon data from this site with comparable data from other sites leads to a general paleoenvironmental model covering the 8300-6000 B.P. period for the American Southwest. This allows reconstruction of the character of paleoclimatic variations on the resources used by the Archaic occupants of this cave site, and assessment of theories of the Anthropology of Southwestern Archaic populations.

Argues that the canons of evidence that apply to artifactual evidence of prehistoric behavior patterns are sometimes distinct from those that apply to non-artifactual evidence, and the logic and archaeological value of the latter is not less simply because it is different. The essay is intended to instruct and sensitise archaeologists to this issue as much as it is to allay concern that the pollen evidence for Archaic maize cultivation at the Koster site may not be credible. 49 p. Description
Major study intended as the draft of a chapter in a report on the archaeological mitigation program for a populous Hohokam village in the Salt River Valley, Arizona. Though the study generated an unusually large body of well controlled archaeological-context palynological data, it did not result in the discovery of new information about Hohokam prehistory. Assessments of this failure, however, led to significant methodological lessons for archaeological pollen studies.
