Provides a brief analysis of the legal and financial feasibility of the March 16, 2000 proposal, as well as a comparative analysis of (1) the conservation value, (2) the level of cultural resource protection, and (3) the fiscal impact of the proposal as measured against other development projects and against the various alternatives that might be exercised by the landowner.
Provides a detailed description of plants and animals that are being considered as potentially covered under the multi-species program, organized by taxonomic group. Two strong themes emerge when this compilation of species accounts is read together: one is the enormous importance of aquatic and riparian-based habitats to the majority of priority vulnerable species, and the other is the very bleak biological status of the riparian system.
Pima County contracted with Arizona Game and Fish Department to conduct telemetry analysis and gather information that would lead to effective conservation and recovery initiatives for the cactus ferruginous pygmy-owl. During 1997, banded birds were monitored. Beginning in 1998 and during 1999, pygmy-owls were radio-marked with backpack transmitters and followed on foot or by vehicle.
A companion to the study issued on July 5, 2000 entitled 'Cactus Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl Investigations in Pima County.' The major objective was to determine whether pygmy-owls chose nest sites or perch trees with characteristics that differ from other available sites within a nesting territory.
Provides a brief summary of some of the resource issues that make the Cienega Creek watershed vital to the overall success of the SDCP, and includes recommendations for conserving land within the watershed.
Builds from the June 2000 document (Priority Vulnerable Species) by essentially translating written details of each species' natural and biological history to the geographic information system, where a computer survey of the landscape can take place much faster than surveys and expeditions in the field.
A companion to the "Importance of Conserving Resources in the CIenega Creek Watershed" document and provides a focus on Altar Valley. This report includes detailed investigations into the historic conditions of the watershed, current rangeland conditions of biotic communities, and the environmental impact of a potential floodplain project.
Provides a brief update on the SDCP in the areas of research, education and community participation, and intergovernmental cooperation.
Pima County Department of Transportation's Technical Services Division maintains GIS hardware, software, and databases with skilled personnel and has applied TIS technology to the SDCP, adapting, creating or acquiring over 1000 data layers for use in the Plan. Metadata has been developed for some of these layers.
On the County's behalf, the Arizona Open Land Trust has entered into two purchase agreements for the Buckelew Farms property. Under this conservation acquisition proposal, farming would continue in the areas currently farmed, grazing would continue on a seasonal basis, and the popular annual pumpkin festival would continue. However, the County and the Buckelew's would work together to enhance opportunities for wildlife habitat on the farm and grazing lands.
