This report describes the different, and sometimes conflicting, conceptions of land use that have been held by residents of southern Arizona during the past 500 years. Briefly outlining major events in the Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo experience, the report provides a chronology of events.

Divided into four parts, the report summarizes available information that reflects the experience of (1) ancient peoples of Southern Arizona; (2) indigenous peoples; (3) non-indigenous peoples of the historical period; and (4) Pima County today.
Describes the evolution of transportation routes and transportation methods in Pima County throughout time, and the effect that modes of transportation have had on the size and form of the community. Stage, freight, and railroad transportation followed the main historic corridors established by previous cultures and technologies.
