Pima County, in partnership with the National Park Service, has been an active participant in the development of a 70 mile segment of the trail. With the preparation of this Master Plan, Pima County has embarked on an active program to acquire the necessary rights-of-way and easements and to construct the Pima County segment of the national historic trail.
On March 2, 1999, the Board of Supervisors of Pima County, Arizona adopted the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan. This Plan is the largest and most comprehensive regional multi-species conservation plan in the United States. These memorandums of understanding record the agreements made with cooperating agencies.
To prevent unwanted urban sprawl and unregulated development, it is most important that Pima County encourage and retain viable ranches. Ranching is a significant land use that has served to protect our natural open space, and it continues to be an important traditional industry that has shaped the rural landscape.
Evaluates the conservation significance of county-owned properties in Avra Valley, specifically with regard to Priority Vulnerable Species and the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan.
Brings together the findings of previous reports and suggests policies to address water quality issues in Pima County.
These proposals bring together the new policy proposals from the 2001 draft Comprehensive Plan Update and the 1992 Regional Plan and Special Area Policies. One of the proposed regional plan policies suggests that natural and cultural resources should be protected according to their value under a Conservation Lands System.
Conservation easements are becoming an important mechanism in Pima County for dealing with matters such as the establishment of mitigation banks and the negotiation of conservation commitments with federal environmental regulatory agencies. This tool will also assist in the implementation of the Ranch Conservation Element of the SDCP. Includes the verbatim proceedings of a workshop on conservation held on August 18, 2001.
