This study from the citizens of the Arivaca community proposes to establish an Arivaca Resource Management Zone, where a atwo level management plan integrates the otherwise fragmented land use and water policies of the various regulatory agencies. The Arivaca watershed contains one of the last remaining cienegas and perennial streams in southern Arizona. These unusual water features exist because the area is still in a state of balance, where annual water consumption is less than the natural recharge replenishing the aquifer during years of average precipitation.
Provides a review of cultural resources management on the public lands as currently practiced in Pima County, Arizona. Cultural resources include archaeological sites, historic resources, and places of traditional cultural value. This report examines which agencies are responsible for cultural resource management, when they began their programs, how management is conducted, and the challenges that must be met in order to achieve the goal of preserving and protecting cultural resources for future generations.
Provides eight fact sheets that highlight land uses during the last twelve thousand years. Each fact sheet describes the environmental conditions and settlement patterns of the time. A map of the important archaeologic or historic sites is provided for each period.
In order to communicate effectively about land use in Pima County, we must understand that different individuals and groups of people have assigned meaning to places and landscapes in Pima County in accordance with their experiences and their mode of communication. Ten different cultures and their landscapes are described, providing a fascinating summary of the history of each group in the area.
Priority cultural resources are places of such importance to the history and culture of Pima County that their protection is warranted in the public interest. Out of more than 3,500 known archaeological sites and 4,000 historic buildings, 229 priority cultural resources were identified.
Identifies key potential threats and stressors to vulnerable species in Pima County, and to the biological and hydrological resources that support these species. Emphasis has been placed on identifying the specific components of past, existing, and proposed land and water uses that pose the greatest potential threats over the next 30 years to focal species and special habitats, plant associations, and communities.
Builds upon the "Biological Stress Assessment" through the identification of threats and stressors to watercourses within Pima County. It provides background on technical and water policy matters, describes potential and existing impacts to watercourses within Pima County, suggests options for reducing stressors, and outlines a number of issues for discussion withing each watershed planning unit.
The first four sections present background information to define cultural resources and to explain the results of three years of effort ot locate, characterize, evaluate and comparatively analyze cultural resources in eastern Pima County. The last section examines each of these alternatives and concludes with a brief assessment of the effect of the no action alternative on cultural resources.
Pima County is blessed with a rich and varying record of human settlement over the 11,000 years representing prehistoric, Spanish Colonial, and Mexican-American influences in our history. The County's archaeological site is the building of structure with traditional cultural values and historic landscapes are all nonrenewable cultural resources.
