The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) requested the Arizona Department of Health Services to determine whether exposure to tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in the indoor air of a vacant dry cleaning facility and an attached convenience store posed a health threat to workers renovating the former dry cleaners and the patrons and employees of the convenience store. The former Viking Cleaners operated from 1954 until 2000. The building houses two businesses, Viking Cleaners, which is currently vacant but under renovation, and an attached convenience store that is currently in operation.

The purpose of this report is to document the evaluation of the public health effects of the air emissions from the Central Garden and Pet Supply Warehouse fire that was verbally provided during the response efforts to the fire event. The facility contained a variety of lawn and garden supplies including pesticides, herbicides, and pool maintenance chemicals. The fire also involved a portion of a pharmaceutical supply firm which contained medical supplies ranging from liquid and pill-form medicines to sterile syringes and other physical supplies.

The W.R. Grace facility in Phoenix, Arizona, received vermiculite concentrate from the Libby, Montana, vermiculite mine. W.R. Grace Company has owned and operated the Arizona site since 1964. In 1964 W.R. Grace purchased the company that had previously occupied the site and, following the relocation of its vermiculite exfoliation furnace

The W.R. Grace facility in Phoenix, Arizona, received vermiculite concentrate from the Libby, Montana, vermiculite mine. W.R. Grace Company has owned and operated the Arizona site since 1964. In 1964 W.R. Grace purchased the company that had previously occupied the site and, following the relocation of its vermiculite exfoliation furnace from Glendale, Arizona, began processing vermiculite concentrate and marketing it under the Zonolite® brand. The objective of this health consultation is to evaluate exposure pathways and potential health effects in those persons who, between 1964 and 2002, may have been exposed to Libby asbestos as a result of vermiculite concentrate processing activities and waste materials from the W.R. Grace exfoliation facility in Phoenix.

The Arizona Department of Health Services was asked by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to evaluate the potential health effects from inhalation of toxic vapors as a result of an unplanned, concentrated nitric acid release. The Arizona Department of Health Services was asked by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to evaluate the potential health effects from inhalation of toxic vapors as a result of an unplanned, concentrated nitric acid release. According to Hudson Farms, at approximately 1 pm on July 1st, concentrated nitric acid began escaping from a small leak in a 33,000 gallon storage tank. By 4:30 pm, the first responding fire department units observed an orange colored plume that was moving with the wind direction. The large plume continued to dissipate throughout the area until about 8:30 pm that night. Small amounts of nitric acid that was generally restricted to the Hudson property continued to leak until approximately 8 am the morning of July 2nd when pumping of acid waste waters into emergency storage tanks was completed. It is estimated by ADEQ that a total of 4,0 00-4,500 gallons of concentrated nitric acid was released from the storage tank. Approximately 600 people from the town of Laveen and the Gila River Indian Community were immediately evacuated. Residents were allowed re -entry to their homes the following day, July 2nd at approximately 10 am.

Description

The Miller Road Treatment Facility was built by the North Indian Bend Wash Participating Companies to treat groundwater in order to reduce the levels of volatile organic compounds that have contaminated the aquifers. The facility was brought on-line in March 1997, and ownership was transferred to AAWC in December 1997.

The Miller Road Treatment Facility was built by the North Indian Bend Wash Participating Companies to treat groundwater in order to reduce the levels of volatile organic compounds that have contaminated the aquifers. The facility was brought on-line in March 1997, and ownership was transferred to AAWC in December 1997. The facility processes the groundwater to remove the VOCs. Between January 15–17, 2008 trichloroethylene (TCE) was detected in the Paradise Valley Water System. Arizona American Water Company, who own and operate the Paradise Valley system, contacted the Arizona Department of Health Services and requested assistance in determining possible health risks from exposures related to this incidence. In response, the Arizona Department of Health Services reviewed existing data and performed a health consultation to evaluate the possibility of adverse health effects associated with this event.
