The general goal of this report was to collect data on citizens’ needs for information about neighborhood crime patterns and trends, terrorism, and public emergency planning and response in the western region of the Phoenix metropolitan area. There was particular interest in obtaining citizen feedback on data-sharing questions related to terrorism prevention.
As part of the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Smart Policing Initiative, the Glendale Police Department and the Center for Violence Prevention and Community Safety at Arizona State University found that convenience stores -- particularly Circle K's -- disproportionately contributed to crime and disorder in the city of Glendale. The Center reached out to other law enforcement agencies in the Phoenix metropolitan area, and in June 2011, they authored a report based on 2010 data from four cities: Glendale, Mesa, Phoenix, and Tempe. The 2010 report revealed that, when compared to other convenience stores Circle K’s, were disproportionately responsible for crime and disorder, regardless of their neighborhood or city.
Over the past year anecdotal evidence from media reports has suggested disproportionate levels of crime and violence occurring at Circle K stores in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Criminal events depicted by the media often took the form of individuals engaging in some type of minor criminal activity at a Circle K, and the events spiraling out of control. As a consequence of these observations, and subsequent federally sponsored research examining problem places in Glendale, Arizona, faculty and staff from the Center for Violence Prevention and Community Safety at Arizona State University reached out to several valley police departments and requested official data to more systematically examine this potential problem. This report presents our findings and our recommendations.
On a biennial basis, the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission is tasked with preparing for the governor a criminal justice system trends report. Available resources, the size and complexity of the criminal justice system and the availability of relevant data influence the scope of the issues addressed in the report. In support of data-driven decision making, this report uses publicly available data to describe the activity of Arizona’s criminal justice system from law enforcement agencies description of the offenses reported to their agencies to the population of the Arizona Department of Corrections.
The "2003 White Paper" attempts to present a comprehensive statewide report on the occurrence of crime in Arizona, as well as the associated workload of the criminal justice system. One of the most comprehensive resources since the publication of the "1995 White Paper" was the "2002 Crime Trends in Arizona" report. The "2003 White Paper" builds upon the "Crime Trends" report and gives the reader the comprehensive comparison to the changes that have taken place in the criminal justice system since the "1995 White Paper." It is the intent of this study to provide information in a factual and objective manner allowing easy access and individual interpretation.
Provides crime statistics for the previous three years. Higher education institutions are required to give timely warnings of crimes that represent a threat to the safety of students or employees, and to make public
their campus security policies.
Based on the National Crime Victimization Survey, but modified for a brief telephone interview rather than lengthy face-to-face interviews. The primary goal is to produce estimates of violent, property, identity theft, and hate crime victimization for Arizona, Maricopa County, and Pima County.
Recognizing the potential impact to public safety and civil rights to the citizens of Arizona, in 2013, a strategic assessment project was initiated to identify the nature and impact of issues affecting complete and accurate criminal history data within the state.
Much of Arizona’s criminal justice system is organized and functions at the municipal and county level. Aggregating the data to describe system activity for the state as a whole can mask important differences in crime and criminal justice system activity at the local level. In this report, data available on law enforcement, court, probation, and corrections activity impacting each county are compiled to give county-based criminal justice policymakers and practitioners an overview of crime and criminal justice system activity in their county.
