The settlers had to fulfill certain requirements, usually with concerns to their jobs, religion, and moral conduct, in order to gain permanent residency. The police were charged with investigating the moral conduct of the settlers who requested permanent residency.

The documents in this collection include his first contract, baptism certificate, and "reviews" written by his past owners attesting to his good conduct. The second to lat page in this selection certifies that Antonio sought to become a Spanish subject and obey Spanish laws; it is signed by an official who accepted Antonio's request for permanent residence in Cuba. 1863

This is a ship manifest of 218 Chinese settlers who arrived in the port of Havana on May 12, 1867, aboard the Bremen ship "Confucius." The list included the original Chinese name, new Christian name, and age of each settler. The settlers who died during the journey were marked within the list; only 5 settlers died. 1867.
