Description
This report was written by a member of the local board of health of Havana- Junta Local de Sanidad de la Habana, to a government official regarding the procedures and regulations for ships that arrived into the port of Havana with Chinese settlers on board, and the importance of those procedures. The board member explained that once the ships were docked in the port, the company introducing the settlers was required to provide ship manifests, the settlers' contracts, lists of the settlers who died during the journey and the causes of their deaths, and other documents to support that the settlers had agreed to relocate to Cuba voluntarily. He also explained that before any person on board the ships could disembark, that the ship, crew members, and settlers had to be put under observation. In addition, it was the responsibility of the captain of the government to oversee that all of the measures were carried out, and that only the captain could give permission for the settlers to disembark after all of the necessary documents were reviewed. Upon the completion of a labor contract with a Cuban landlord, this rehire request was issued for Rufino- a Chinese settler, who wished to enter a new labor contract with Manuel G. Description
These requests for a passport were written on behalf of a Cuban man named Guillermo Midlestein who was planning to travel to the United States accompanied by his Chinese colonist named Pio. Guillermo had applied for a passport for Pio, but his request was denied. In these documents he sought permission from local government officials to expedite a passport for Pio, so that the two of them could sail to the United States aboard the Spanish ship "Argo" the following morning. 1872.
