Tomimoto Kenkichi (1886-1963), a native of Nara, was named a Japanese National Living Treasure in 1955. Tomimoto was associated with the mingei (folk craft) movement, and was influenced by the work of William Morris, whose work he encountered during a visit to England. Tomimoto believed that high-quality, aesthetically-pleasing ceramics should be available to everyone. Tomimoto is primarily known for his iroe-jiki (overglaze enamel porcelain), particularly for his delicate brushwork and elegant designs, which departed from the earthy, naturalistic styles that most mingei ceramicists favored.
