    • These are the center and right panels of a triptych depicting a scene from a kabuki play about the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. The artist’s signature would have been on the missing leftmost panel but this was likely originally signed ‘Kōchōrō,’ a signature used by Utagawa Kunisada III. The character Ukita Chūnagon is the historical personage Ukita Hideie 宇喜多 秀家, who led an army of 17,000 into battle against the Tokugawa forces at Sekigahara, and fled to Satsuma province after the defeat. 'Chūnagon' is a government title, meaning "middle councilor.'
    • Gift of Drs. Thomas and Martha Carter
    • The left panel of this diptych (originally the center of a triptych) is also held by the Waseda University Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum in Tokyo.
