Shizuka Gozen was the mistress of Yoritomo's brother, the famed general of the Genpei War, Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Soon after the Minamoto clan won the war, Yoritomo ordered the execution of Yoshitsune, who fled. Shizuka Gozen, said to be pregnant with Yoshitsune's child, was captured, and according to legend, was forced to dance for Yoritomo at his court in Kamakura. Shizuka Gozen complied, but sang only songs of her love for Yoshitsune.
