    • The present-day "villages" or "quarters" of Phnom Penh emerged in the late 19th century. Between 1866 and 1890, King Norodom alloted pieces of land in the central part of the capital, along the Tonle Sap, to the Chinese community. He built shophouses here which he let to them at high prices.
