The State and Local Arizona Documents (SALAD) collection contains documents published by the State of Arizona, its Counties, incorporated Cities or Towns, or affiliated Councils of Government; documents produced under the auspices of a state or local agency, board, commission or department, including reports made to these units; and Salt River Project, a licensed municipality. ASU is a primary collector of state publications and makes a concerted effort to acquire and catalog most materials published by state and local governmental agencies.

The ASU Digital Repository provides access to digital SALAD publications, however the ASU Libraries’ non-digitized Arizona documents can be searched through the ASU Libraries Catalog. For additional assistance, Ask A Government Documents Librarian.

The primary mission of Arizona Highways magazine (AHM) is to promote travel and tourism in Arizona. The magazine has conducted a subscriber survey approximately every five years since the early 1990s, with the last survey conducted in 2009. However, no longitudinal analysis of survey data has ever been conducted to identify trends over time. This study has provided information regarding the reading habits of AHM subscribers, their interest in AHM editorial content, and their opinions regarding their subscriber experience. Findings from the study also provided insights into AHM customer loyalty, engagement, and purchasing behaviors; the perceived value of subscribership and trust in the AHM brand as a credible source for travel information; reader likelihood of recommending AHM to others; and the influence of AHM on tourism. Finally, this study also provided information obtained from former AHM subscribers, including their primary reasons for nonrenewal and suggestions regarding benefits or offers that would encourage them to reconsider subscribing. Recommendations were developed to assist AHM in adjusting its scope and focus to respond to changing reader expectations and preferences, particularly those in the 25-54 age group, and to support ongoing improvement in AHM's marketing and promotion activities and customer service processes. The recommendations are presented within a suggested implementation plan consisting of short-, mid-, and long-term actions. The research findings can be used by AHM to inform development of subscriber acquisition and retention strategies and to ensure that business planning, editorial, and marketing strategies align with reader expectations of AHM regarding the inherent trust and credibility of its brand.

Arizona Highways magazine is a powerful tool in highlighting, and presumably attracting tourists to, Arizona, and is particularly renowned for its photography. The publication currently has over one million readers and circulates in all 50 states and in two‐thirds of the world’s countries. In addition to the print publication, AHM utilizes electronic media, namely a website and Facebook Page, to reach customers and potential tourists. The Facebook Page enables users to engage in dialogue and interaction with each other—uploading photographs, sharing accounts of personal travel experiences, and reacting to specific AHM content—thereby personalizing their connection with the magazine and fellow users.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) operates a transportation library. The mission of the ADOT Library is to provide ADOT employees with the published information they need to carry out their job responsibilities contributing to a safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation system in Arizona. Historically, ADOT's librarians have used professional judgment to decide which materials to add to the collection. This research is the first formal investigation to determine the information needs of ADOT staff and the role of the Library in meeting those needs. This study has provided information regarding: (a) the information needs of the ADOT staff, including the means by which they currently obtain the information they need; (b) preferences regarding access to Library services and resources; and (c) awareness and use of the ADOT Library. Findings from the study also provided insights into the role of transportation libraries, the extent to which ADOT Library practices align with acknowledged effective practices in transportation libraries overall, and opportunities for ongoing improvement and enhancement of Library operations, communications and marketing efforts, customer service, and valuation. Recommendations were developed to facilitate delivery of ADOT Library services in fiscal periods characterized by severe budgetary constraints and limited resources as well as in less constricted fiscal periods permitting continued investment in ADOT Library resources (staff, collection materials, information technologies). The research findings can be used by ADOT to inform strategic and contingency planning efforts and will enable ADOT to make data-driven decisions regarding the Library collection and services.

We compare the current Canadian Supply Management regime in which producers and importers benefit from rent-seeking activities that set production quota and import quota levels with those under a tariff, in which producers partakes in rent-seeking activities in order to induce the government to introduce a favorable tariff regime. We explore three different quota-setting games: (1) the import quota and production quota are set at a level that arises from a Cournot-Nash equilibrium between producers and importers; (2) the producer marketing board acts as a Stackelberg leader, taking into account the importers’ reaction to its production quota level; and (3) the importer behaves as a Stackelberg leader, taking into account producers’ reaction to its import quota level. We compare these quota-setting games with two different tariff-setting games: (1) A non-cooperative game in which the government sets the tariff at a level that maximizes tariff revenue; and (2) A cooperative game in which producers, through rent-seeking activities, induce the government to set the tariff at a level that maximizes joint government and producer rents.

We investigate the underlying reasons for producers’ choice of marketing channels for stocker cattle in the United States. In addition to traditional public auctions, private sales, video auctions, and Internet auctions have been recently used in the marketing of stocker cattle. We find that while the number of marketing options may have increased in recent years, only relatively large producers can actually take advantage of these options. The marketing options for smaller producers are still limited due to their relative size. We also find that the number of cattle marketed privately and through video and Internet auctions is positively correlated with herd size. In addition, the New Institutional Economics provides insights into how herd size influences the choice of marketing channels.

The economic theories of New Institutional Economics, auctions, and welfare economics are used to analyze the potential for E-Commerce as an institution within the agricultural sector. We discuss the theory of the firm within the NIE paradigm and focus on the potential for E-Commerce to reduce transaction costs, search costs, and the costs associated with buying and selling livestock under various auction formats. We develop a theoretical model that captures the effect of Internet feeder-cattle auctions on Florida’s cattle market at three different levels in the marketing channel. We discuss the institutional arrangements and marketing mechanisms associated with the marketing of stocker and feeder cattle in Florida. We present the results of a survey distributed to cattle producers in North Florida regarding herd size, direct transaction costs of marketing cattle, and the implications of internet technology. Finally, we perform an empirical welfare analysis in order to estimate the impact of reduced transaction costs associated with Internet and video livestock auctions on cow-calf operators and backgrounders in Florida.
